Overview

The Mover, working under the general direction of the Supervisor and/or Lead Mover, delivers, and picks up furniture, paper goods, machinery, rental equipment, and other materials as required. The incumbent will be required to move and transfer items using manual and powered material handling equipment, including flat dollies, appliance dollies, forklifts, and large trucks. The Mover must be able to obtain a forklift certification within 6 months of hire. They will also be required to occasionally work for the Sanitation Crew as a drivers’ assistant or refuse scooter operator. This position requires good judgment, and the ability to work within deadlines to perform multiple tasks and communicate effectively with customers.

Responsibilities

Daily Tasks 

  • Drive and operate (non-CDL, 16-26 ft) delivery trucks throughout the University as well as off-campus to deliver and/or pick up furniture, paper goods, machinery, rental equipment, or other items as needed. Duties include warehouse order processing, packing, and shipping of paper products and cleaning supplies to various locations on campus.
  • Lift heavy objects (up to 100 pounds) and transfer greater weight using either manual or powered material handling equipment such as flat dollies, pallet jacks, forklifts, etc.
  • The ability to learn how to effectively use a mobile application for an electronic work order system within 3 months of the hire date.
  • Serve as backup for the Sanitation Crew, operating refuse scooters, loading dumpsters, cleaning dumpster sites or transferring medical waste as needed. Also, serve as backup for warehouse operation attendant.
  • Perform basic maintenance on vehicles, material handling equipment, and rental equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Must be able to comprehend written and oral instructions in English.
  • This position involves operation of a commercial motor vehicle over 10,000lbs. GVWR and is subject to U.S. DOT/FMCSA regulations. Candidate must meet all applicable non-CDL DOT requirements:
  • Valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certification (Medical Card), or the ability to obtain one prior to start date - FMCS - Medical Examiner's Certificate which will need to re-certified based on the regulations
  • Valid permanent driver’s license (non-provisional, non-probationary, non-interim) issued by US State (International Driver’s License are not acceptable) as outlined in the Fleet Safety Policy
  • Have experience driving a manual transmission. 
  • Must be proficient at backing vehicles into tight spaces.
  • Ability to use carpentry tools such as drills, hand saws, screwdrivers, etc. in performing minor maintenance to the rental equipment.
  • Must be able to operate material handling equipment that can transfer heavier
  • Must be able to obtain Fork Lift Certification within six months of hire.
  • Experience and knowledge of equipment and methods used in the transfer of furniture, heavy boxes, machinery, rental equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to work overtime; before the start of shift, at end of shift, weekends, etc.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit for less than 2 hours during an 8-hour day.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle or heavy equipment (e.g., forklift or order picker) occasionally (less than 33% of the workday).
  • Must be able to lift or carry up to 50 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday) and up to 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday).
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds in a range of motions from floor to shoulder height.
  • Must be able to climb up to 4 flights of stairs while carrying up to 50 pounds by hand or while moving objects with appliance dollies or similar material handling tools requiring up to 100 pounds of pushing or pulling forces occasionally (up to 33% of the workday).
  • Must be able to use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling frequently (34 – 66% of the workday).
  • Must be able to squat, reach overhead, lift overhead, push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the workday).
  • Must be able to bend, climb stairs or ladders, and push or pull with force up to 50 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday).
  • Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions; shovel snow and operate a snow blower.
  • Must possess the ability to work at heights, physical agility and full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the SEIU 175 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • The final candidate will be required to complete a background check and a post-offer pre-employment physical.
  • All Facilities employees are core essential employees and are expected to be available to work as directed by the department during emergencies impacting university operations.
  • At times during the academic year management reserves the right to limit approval of leave requests in order to accommodate university special events or activities.
