The Molecular Biology department seeks applicants for an open Glasswasher/Lab Assistant position. The Glasswasher will perform routine non-technical laboratory tasks predominantly mechanical in nature. 


The Laboratory Glassware Washer will:

  • Wash and sterilize glassware, apparatus, instruments and utensils according to established methods and procedures for research laboratories. 
  • Keep glassware, instruments, equipment and experimental area clean, neat and in good order.
  • Will occasionally assist in the production of Drosophila (fly) food in the Department’s facility.

The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Stand or walk for up to two hours at one time for up to eight hours per day. 
  • Sit for less than two hours per day.
  • Lift or carry up to ten pounds constantly (over 66% of the workday) and 25 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the work day).
  • Push or pull using forces up to 25 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the work day).
  • Repetitively use hands for simple grasping, pushing or pulling, and fine manipulations.
  • Bend, squat, reach overhead, lift overhead, or push or pull occasionally (up to 33% of the work day).
  • Lift up to 25 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead.
  • Possess full range of body motions and physical agility.
  • Manipulate and handle glassware, pipettes and tips and pertinent equipment to clean, sterilize and dry.




Skills Required:

  • Must be dexterous in order to complete all tasks.
  • Must be flexible and willing to cover for co-workers routinely.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and to read, write and follow instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to take direction and work as part of a team.
  • Must have the ability to coordinate tasks to meet deadlines, to work rapidly during rush periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year’s experience in restaurant kitchen, hospital setting, or laboratory setting as dishwasher or in janitorial role.
  • Basic computer skills a plus.
